Australia to Sri Lanka Writing Fellowship

As the 2013 Sydney Writers Festival begins a week of imaginative storytelling, Templeberg Villa takes great pleasure in inviting writers from across Australia to apply for the 2013 inaugural Templeberg Australia to Sri Lanka Writing Fellowship, a funded, month-long writing residence in stunning Galle, Sri Lanka administered by Writers Victoria.

Fiction, non-fiction and performing arts writers, poets, journalists and bloggers from around Australia are encouraged to apply for the Fellowship, which includes return economy airfares, accommodation at Templeberg Villa (templeberg.com), full board and a $1,000 allowance.

“Sri Lanka has a strong literary tradition, particularly of short stories and poetry, dating back almost 2000 years”, explains Sydney-based Sri Lankan Ambassador Bandula Jayasekara.

“With such ancient storytelling, it’s exciting to consider the voices and narratives from our culture that the winner of the Fellowship will be exposed to during their time in Galle”.

“International writers like Paul Bowles have previously made the area around Galle their home, finding inspiration in the mix of cultures, the tropical scenery and the incomparable sunsets,” says Christopher Shields who co-owns the Villa with partner Brent Carey.

“We felt that hosting a writer at Templeberg Villa could be our way to support great Australian writing. Borrowing the words of English literary critic and writer Cyrill Connolly, “a writer is in danger of allowing his talent to dull who lets more than a year go past without finding himself in his rightful place of composition, the small single unluxurious ‘retreat’ of the twentieth century, the hotel bedroom,” Shields adds.

Galle, on Sri Lanka’s south coast, is home to a world-famous literary festival and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Templeberg Villa is one of the few remaining Dutch colonial merchant houses on the island and will be an inspiring location for any writer wishing to focus on a writing project over the month long fellowship.

Applications are now open and close midnight 14 June. The Fellowship is administered by Writers Victoria and must be taken before 31 December 2013.
